What Is Decision Making?

Decision making is the process of selecting a course of action from multiple alternatives, based on available information, judgment, and priorities. In engineering, this ranges from small choices (which library to use) to significant ones (whether to rewrite or patch a system).

Why It Matters for Placements

  • Engineers make dozens of small decisions daily; being able to decide quickly and reasonably prevents bottlenecks
  • Overthinking or avoiding decisions is as costly to a team as making a wrong one, sometimes more so
  • Interviewers ask about decision making to see your reasoning process, not just whether the outcome was good
  • Good decision-makers are comfortable being wrong sometimes, because they know their process was sound

How to Improve This Skill

  1. 1Give yourself an explicit time limit for low-stakes decisions (e.g. 5 minutes) to build decisiveness
  2. 2For bigger decisions, list your top three options and one clear reason for and against each
  3. 3Separate "reversible" decisions (try it and adjust) from "irreversible" ones, and move faster on the former
  4. 4After a decision, briefly note what you expected to happen, so you can calibrate your judgment over time
  5. 5When stuck between two good options, remind yourself that a decided-but-imperfect choice often beats a perfect-but-late one

Three days before a hackathon deadline, your team's core feature was not working reliably, and you had to decide whether to keep debugging or pivot to a simpler backup idea.

You set a two-hour hard limit to fix the core issue, and when it was not resolved in time, you committed fully to the backup idea rather than splitting effort, which let the team ship a smaller but working product instead of nothing.
